Celebrating performance and programming throughout the year focused on the occult, mysticism, and the unknown, San Diego Art Institute will once again put the “cult” in “culture”. This event will feature new performances by Amanda Yates Garcia (The Oracle of Los Angeles), Molly Jo Shea, and Angela Jennings, exploring themes as diverse as internet scams and hypnotism, goddesses of civilization, and the sacred and profane. Also throughout the evening, audience members will have the opportunity to have their tarot cards read by Zac Monday, interact with renowned mentalist Ralph Hamrick, and learn about stone cleansing with Samantha Jean Wilson. The night will culminate with a musical performance by Blood Ponies.
About the performers:
Amanda Yates Garcia is an artist, writer, witch, healer and the Oracle of Los Angeles. Recent performance rituals include Capitalism Exorcism at Human Resources and Devouring Patriarchy at the Women’s Center for Creative Work. Other venues to feature her work include the Hammer Museum, Side Street Projects, REDCAT, Public Fiction, and Highways Performance Space. Her writing has been featured in publications such as CARLA, Black Clock, the Rough Magick anthology, Entropy, Synema Publikationen, and WITCH. Amanda hosts her bi-monthly show Oracle Hour on KCHUNG radio; teaches the Magical Praxis monthly mystery school; and performance private rites of healing and empowerment at her magical studio in West Adams. Molly Jo Shea is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice comprises performance, object-making, and creating interactive experiences. Growing up as the daughter of an opera singer and a special effects guru, her work is a combination of decadence and horror dragged through a hall of mirrors. With an interest in manipulating systems, Shea creates safe environments for complicated topics to be broken down including gender, power, failure, and death. These experiences perfect familiar modes of communication and engage with rapidly advancing technologies with a humorous back and forth between popular culture and her own identity.
Angela Jennings researches modes of hierarchical systems encompassing race, knowledge, material and gender. Her art practice is distinct despite being transcribed through interdisciplinary acts including performance, painting, sculpture, video and photography. Jennings received a BS in Art Education from South Dakota State University along with a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Studio Art from Brandeis University and her MFA from the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego.
Plant Magik, a collaboration between Amanda Yates Garcia and Krystal Chang, will have Liberty wands on view and available for purchase at the event.
