27 HORSES: CHRIS TRAVERS

  • SDAI Project Space 141 Horton Plaza (map)

The San Diego Art Institute is pleased to present “27 Horses” a solo project by Chris Travers at SDAI Project Space in Horton Plaza. The opening reception will take place at the SDAI Project Space, 141 Horton Plaza, on Friday, December 8 from 6pm-9pm. The exhibition will be open Saturdays and Sundays, 12pm-5pm and will run until Sunday, December 31.

The exhibition 27 Horses is the result of a year of exploration into the questions raised by the 2016 horse racing season at the Del Mar Racetrack where an alarming number of horses died. Chris Travers, a photographer and museum professional for most of her life, and an animal-lover for all of her life, explores horse racing in her own backyard, through photography and graphic illustration.

On this journey Travers met gamblers, jockeys, trainers, owners, and families looking for a day of fun. She photographed races and early morning workouts, and visited horse rescues to understand what horse racing, once arguably the most popular sport in America, has become. Looking beyond the hats, parties, music, and gambling, her view is squarely on the horses. She invites you to look through their eyes and into their world, and consider the ethics of a sports where these lives are so expendable.
