Sound Collection Helmets, 2017

The Southern California artist team known as Brian and Ryan are best known for their assisted sculpture and performance artwork. The underlying focus in their work centers on developing layers of conversations both between themselves and the public. Tduo will be roaming San Diego with black helmets equipped to pick up sounds at both long and short ranges. Large receiving dishes attached to the helmets will allow the artists to record conversations, public space sounds, and the general ambient noise of the city. As the receivers in their helmets collect conversations and record them, other sounds from the city will cross pollinate the recordings and add unexpected layers to the soundtrack. Brian and Ryan will upload the recorded conversations and sounds to an online database. These uploads will be made available to the other artists in the show and interested parties to use in their sound recordings in any manner they see fit.

Brian Black and Ryan Bulis have been working collaboratively in Southern California since 2004. This artist team appropriates iconic activities and challenges preconceptions of masculinity, athleticism and identity. Their assisted sculptures are exaggerated archetypes taken from the workplace, sports and pedestrian life. By adjusting the familiar and pushing the level of absurdity in their art making, they invite the audience to reconsider the sanctity and boundaries of the art institution. Their collective work allows their independent objectives and concerns to converge into what has simply become known as Brian & Ryan.
