Audiographs II: Multimedia Concert

SDAI is pleased to present a multimedia concert that includes video & electronic sounds. Artists Gaspar Peralta, Caroline Miller, Lyndsay Bloom, and Joao Pedro Oliveira from Mexico, USA and Brazil, will perform their creations in collaboration with other artists to create an audio-visual landscape.

Concert begins at 7:30pm, doors open at 7pm.

About the artists:

Gaspar Peralta (Tijuana B.C. México) Pianist, composer and sound artist, His work is developed through different sound creation exercises; free improvisation, electronic music, composition and sound installation. As an instrumentalist he specialises in the interpretation of polyphonic works and contemporary music. In his written work he searches convergence points between free improvisation and composition, as well as the use of repetition as a compositional tool and the exploration of tonality through extended durations. His work has been programmed in different forums and festivals related to experimental and contemporary music stand out; Mutek.Mx International Festival of digital creativity, International Music and Musicology Festival (MX), Sound Though Festival of Music and Sound Research (UK), Center For Contemporary Arts Glasgow, Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts (MX), Digital Culture Center (MX) among others. He has been endowed with several grants and scholarships among the most important we have: honorary Mention Forum Wallis Ars Electronica Festival für Neue Musik (SWI), Programa de Estimulo y Creación Artística in the Young Creators Category PECDA/CONACULTA on acoustic and electroacoustic composition specialty, CECUT artistic production support program/Secretary of Culture in the specialty of multimedia-sound art, has been a scholarship holder in various occasions of the Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts. He holds a Bachelor degree in music-piano performance from the Autonomous University of Baja California.


In June of 2013, Caroline L. Miller embarked on a research expedition in the Philippine Sea, sailing from Taiwan to the Republic of Palau as part of an oceanographic science party. The class politics of ship life, hours of physical labor in the tropical humidity, and adventures on deck alone at night fundamentally changed her attitudes toward music and life. Since that time, C.L.M.’s music has been devoted to the modeling of human social relations, behaviors of non-human (animal, plant, etc.) life or theoretical organisms, and kinesthetic and tactile aspects of composition. Her current written research focuses on: intersections between digital glitch aesthetics, materiality, and tactility in post-dubstep electronica; the electronic music scene in the Midwest; and biomusic.  Since 2012, she has organized and curated annual freeform concerts at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. C.L.M.'s music has appeared around the world. She has recently enjoyed performances by Synchromy, SPLICE, Kallisti, Forest Collective, WasteLAnd, Wild Rumpus Ensemble, and the Inoo-Kallay Duo; and her works have most recently appeared at SPOR, SCI, SeAM-festival for Elektronische Musik, NYCEMF, Hear Now Festival, SEAMUS, SoundSCAPE, The Only Way is Ethics Festival, and UCSD's own Springfest. Elliptic for percussion, piano and electronics is published on populist records. Caroline is a Ph.D. candidate in music composition at UC San Diego. 

Lyndsay Ellis Bloom (Florida, USA) is a filmmaker and artist working in experimental cinema and film installation. Bloom’s process involves putting media archeology into practice, investigating the physical properties of celluloid film, and considering intersections between handmade chemical recipes, the history of materials usage, and film processing practices. Her recent works follow a trajectory of merging experimental film and science, including collaborative projects with oceanographers and limnologists. She received her BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 2006, and her MFA from The University of California, San Diego in 2016. Bloom's films have screened in venues as diverse as The 9th Berlin International Directors Lounge, Peras De Olmo-Ars Continua in Buenos Aires, Pleasure Dome in Toronto, Fylkingen in Stockholm, SOMA in Mexico City, Brooklyn's Microscope Gallery, The Harvard Film Archive, Birch Aquarium, The Martin Johnson House at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, The San Diego Art Institute, The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Artists’ Television Access in San Francisco, UCLA’s New Wight Gallery, Commonwealth & Council in Los Angeles, CineMarfa Film Festival, and The Austin Film Society. Her eclectic experiences include assisting filmmakers Babette Mangolte and Jennifer Reeves, building dioramas for the Climate Change exhibit at The American Museum of Natural History in New York, and working on the R/V Roger Revelle as an oceanographic researcher for Scripps on a 25-day expedition from Taiwan to Palau. She attended residencies including MAAS Artist Residence in Nijmegen, Netherlands, and SOMA Summer in Ciudad de México. Bloom lives and works in San Diego, California.

João Pedro Oliveira began his music studies at the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon where he studied organ performance. From 1985 to 1990 he moved to the US as a Fulbright student, with a fellowship from Gulbenkian Foundations, where he completed a PhD in Music at the University of New York at Stony Brook. His music includes one chamber opera, several orchestral compositions, a Requiem, 3 string quartets, chamber music, solo instrumental music, electroacoustic music and experimental video. Recently he has been exploring the possibilities of interaction between instrumental and electroacoustic sounds, and most of his recent works use both media. He has received over 30 international prizes and awards for his works, including, among others, the Giga-Hertz Award and the Magisterium Prize from the IMEB (Bourges). His music is played all over the world, and most of his works have been commissioned by Portuguese and foreign groups and foundations. He is Professor at Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil) and Aveiro University (Portugal) where he teaches composition, electroacoustic music and analysis. He published several articles in journals, and has written a book in analysis and 20th century music theory. He contributed to the development of a new generation of Portuguese composers, and several of his students have received national and international awards.
