Interactive Studio Days: Joe Cantrell

Of course it’s no longer your parents’ world out there. Once, highly prized commodities like jewels and real estate had a physical presence; today, some of the most prized possessions are media and information that’s digitized and manipulated.

And it is contemporary artists who want us to take a different perspective on today’s world.

Conventional wisdom has it that digitized data works for us: data is collected at our request and employed by us. But suppose there’s an impact data has on us. In effect, we humans – and, literally, our human bodies – are the receptors of data. We are like sponges and we absorb and filter digital information.

It’s a process that occurs largely undetected.

Artist Joe Cantrell, the Michael J Mahoney Artist-in-Residence at SDAI from March 1 to June 1, 2019, is working on making the impacts of digitized data more visible, more audible, and simply more apparent.

Joe wants visitors to collaborate in using digital audio to see the effect it has on a person’s physical body. It may sound vague, but it’s actually simplicity itself. And it’s interactive, fun, and a perfect family event.

Every Friday, from April 12 to May 10, Joe is holding an Open Studio at SDAI, from 11 am to 4 pm. Do drop by.

As a special incentive, there’s free admission for any visitor who comes in and says, “I’m here to work with Joe.”
