Make Music Day SD

  • San Diego Art Institute 1439 El Prado San Diego, CA, 92101 United States (map)

12pm-5pm - Join TECHNE, Bonnie Jones and Suzanne Thorpe, and discover the fun of found sound! See how easy it is to amplify common, household materials, and how you can make them into instruments of your own. Play with everyday objects like rubber bands, sandpaper, marbles and more, to create your own sonic universe!

12pm-4pm – Aren Skalman will assemble a collection of objects that can be activated by the public to generate sound. By spinning wheels, bowing strings, and exploring how the objects operate, visitors can actively create their own collaborative compositions teetering between noise and music. Some objects emanate sound acoustically, others electronically—while others trigger recorded sounds such as a sonic duel between a street musician and a crow in Bangalore, and improvisations by musical hackers at MusicMakers Hacklab Tijuana.

12pm-4pm – Spectral Teletype with Cooper Baker

Spectral Teletype is an interactive audio-visual sound work that sonifies text from gallery patrons. Participants are invited to transmit messages from their smartphones, and the messages are used to simultaneously display and play a synthetic representation of the text as a scrolling audio spectrum. This work was created with custom software written in Pure Data, C, PHP, and HTML programming languages.

12pm-3pm – Sound Postcards Workshop with Francisco Eme

Sound postcards are brief digital audio compositions that can represent a place, a moment, or an emotional state. Using recordings previously obtained by the participants or recorded during the class, students will develop a “sound postcard” using different digital audio editing techniques.

*Participants should bring a laptop and previously obtained audio recordings.

4pm – Electroacoustic Concert with Francisco Eme

Special musical guests will perform with Francisco Eme (live electronics) to create an improvised electroacoustic music concert. Using real time digital processing and live musicians, this concert will explore the possibilities between acoustic and electronic sounds.

Create your own electronic music with Evan Apodaca's interactive sound installation, Anonymity. Three individual instruments made using the age old tradition of circuit bending will invite participants to listen and play along with one another via headphones

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

More information on TECHNE: http://technesound.org/who-we-are/

Aren Skalman is an artist and instructor based in San Diego, with an MFA from San Diego State University. In 2012 and 2013 he travelled to India as a Fulbright Scholar, where he constructed a rolling, musical sculpture. Aren’s sculptures often incorporate elements of light, sound, and movement to play on literal and metaphorical relationships between visual and sonic resonance. The intention is to bring the viewer’s awareness to the interconnection of image, object, sound, and space: to reflect on their own presence within that relationship. Aren will be presenting a solo exhibition of sound generating objects at the Athenaeum in winter 2016.

Cooper Baker is a sound artist living in San Diego. He regularly plays experimental music at venues along the west coast, and his artwork has been exhibited in galleries and publications throughout the United States and abroad. Cooper holds a Ph.D. in Computer Music from UCSD, an MFA in Experimental Composition, and a BFA in Music Technology from CalArts, where he worked with Morton Subotnick, Mark Trayle, and Barry Schrader. Cooper’s creative work combines custom software and electronics to interactively explore sound using aural, visual, and sculptural elements.

Francisco Eme is originally from Mexico City, and now lives and works in San Diego as a composter, sound, and multimedia artist. His work has developed in the areas of sound art and electroacoustic music, performing pure electronic, instrumental and mixed compositions, sound acts, sound installations, and video. His work has been presented across the US, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Argentina, and El Salvador. Primarily self-taught, Francisco has also studied at the Mexican Center for Music and Sound Arts and the Laboratory of Musical Informatics and Electroacoustic Music at UNAM. As a teacher, he instructs on electronic musical composition, video making, sound engineering, and music production.
