VOLUNTEER

As the only contemporary art institution in Balboa Park, SDAI nurtures the creation of groundbreaking art by providing a dedicated exhibition space for the artistic talent that resides in Southern California and Northern Baja to collaborate, exhibit, and thrive. 

Volunteers at SDAI play an integral role in supporting interactive programming, educational initiatives, and exhibitions.

ROLES

Events Volunteers are welcome to apply on a rolling basis and slots will be filled as needed per SDAI event schedules. This includes exhibition receptions, Free Tuesdays, member programs, satellite events, and more.

Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with setup and breakdown

  • Greeting and checking in guests

  • Taking photographs

  • Assisting Production Manager with A/V as needed

  • Providing support to SDAI staff as needed

Office Volunteers will provide administrative support to SDAI staff this summer. These volunteers would ideally come to SDAI 1-2 days/week starting July 1.  

  • Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Filing, scanning, organizing

  • Assisting with creating mailings

  • Aid in cataloguing inventory, SDAI photos in database

  • Distributing flyers around town

  • Guiding visitors and gallery reception

  • Assisting with gallery/wall prep/lighting design for exhibition installation

Youth Education Volunteers provide support to Education Director and teaching artists during summer camps and educational workshops. Ideal for someone with a background in youth education or someone with an interest in the field.

Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Prepping art projects

  • Providing support during community events

  • Assisting with artwork installation during school exhibitions

  • Giving clear direction to children on art projects

  • Assisting children complete art projects


Bilingual Translation Volunteers assist with Spanish translations for didactics and promotional text as needed, especially during preparation for exhibitions. Must be bilingual in Spanish and English. Ideal for someone with a background in academic-level translations.

This includes:

  • Writing Spanish translations of English text

  • Proofing/Editing didactic for accuracy and grammar
