After a successful career as an interior designer and architect, Lena Johnson has returned to her first love: contemporary photography and painting. Her works possess a strong sense of place with balanced compositions and vivid color palettes. Lena says, "One of the first things I learned in interior design was that color and form can have a profound psychological impact. I used this knowledge for twenty five years to create spaces and buildings that responded to each user's unique requirements. I now use this knowledge to create works of fine art that document the consciousness of places and that inspire the human spirit."
"Like the majority of contemporary photographers, I have given up silver based films and now use digital imaging exclusively although I continue to use traditional photographic papers and canvas for the final image. The new professional digital cameras that I currently use offer unparalleled sharpness, ultra high resolution and detail that cannot be found in the older film methods. In addition, the ability to manipulate the images in PhotoShop gives me greater control over the end result such as the flexibility to print in color or black and white."
Lena’s diverse background as an architect, interior designer and photographer began in 1974 when she worked as a photojournalist at the University of Georgia. Her education includes the Master of Architecture program at the University of Kansas. Lena studied fine art watercolor painting with her mentor Curtis Besinger, a Taliesin Fellow who was trained by Frank Lloyd Wright. Her Masters work also includes studies in Siena, Italy in which she mapped and documented both the public and private gardens in a medieval urban environment.
Lena’s doctoral work in American Studies included research of American Indian traditional religious structures and the metaphysical symbolism that informs their architectural creation. Her extensive travel and international photography throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Central America, and North America has provided her with a rich design vocabulary.
Lena currently favors watercolor painting and contemporary photography and her subjects include nature, urban and rural landscapes, luxury travel, seascapes and architecture. Lena is available for travel and location assignment work.
