San Diego Art Institute Presents Youth Alliance 2018
Eight organizations - Three group shows - One day of Art Making
June 7, 2018 - June 10, 2018
The San Diego Art Institute (SDAI), a regional contemporary art center in Balboa Park, is pleased to announce Youth Alliance 2018: a showcase of student artwork created during the past school year with eight local non-profit organizations including Art Reach, A4LSD, The FRONT Gallery, Casa Familiar, Outside Lens, CoTA, SDAI, and Words Alive! The exhibition includes three distinct group shows and marks the culmination of outreach programs that involved dozens of teaching artists, community volunteers, and hundreds of K-12 students and teachers. By giving the students an opportunity to show their work in a public art space, SDAI hopes to raise awareness for local arts education.
Youth Alliance features three group shows open M-F from 10 am-5 pm and 12 pm-5 pm on weekends with a FREE family workshop on June 9 from 11 am-4 pm.
“The Love You Give” by Words Alive!
The title and theme of this exhibition is a response to The Hate U Give, a #1 bestselling novel by Angie Thomas. The works creatively weave themes exploring identity and duality into communal wood sculptures created by teens from local alternative schools in collaboration with artist Isaias Crow.
“Title 1 Art Fair” by Art Reach, A4LSD, Outside Lens, and SDAI
Title 1 Art Fair celebrates the conclusion of this school year’s Title 1 arts integration residencies with a student exhibition and all-day family Art Making workshop led by SDAI teaching artists on Saturday, June 9th. The Federal Title I program awards funding to schools in the San Diego Unified School District in order to improve academic achievement through arts integration residencies.
Art Reach, A4LSD, Outside Lens, CoTA and SDAI were among many arts organizations that engaged teaching artists in the classroom to develop curricula, increase student/parent participation, promote individual expression, and create new learning opportunities through the arts.
Student works in this collection were inspired by works from artists ranging from Basquiat to Obama portraitist Kehinde Wiley to Tijuana-based artist Paola Villaseñor, aka PANCA.
Casa Familiar's The FRONT - Art Docent Program
The Front’s art docent program provides an innovative space for teens to learn about art and gallery management while developing teamwork skills and strong resumes. Working with artists Francisco Eme and Andrew Sturm, docents created a photography series, a mural, and a video project that highlight the environmental issues facing the San Ysidro district. Selected works from the program will raise awareness on the importance of supporting an underrepresented neighborhood and taking action on local environmental issues.
SDAI is Balboa Park’s contemporary art center connecting emerging and established artists from Southern California and Northern Baja with audiences of all ages to serve our diverse San Diego community.
